Mindful Kids

Mindful Kids is a structured skills based programme that has specifically been designed to help children manage BIG emotions by learning skills that help them to stay more present and calm so they can make better choices with better outcomes. Enhancing children's emotional intelligence, self-esteem and resilience so they can take on new and challenging situations in life!

 

The group programme runs every term for 8 weeks and it's a fun and interactive programme that kids love. Each child is provided with a mindful kids folder with handouts from each session so they can practice their learning at home. and it works better when the whole family practices the skills.

 

Kids will BE what they SEE.

 

Katheryn also offers private sessions for children and teens. She offers a safe and nurturing space that allows children to feel at ease they can be more open to learning. Sessions are tailored to the specific needs of each child.

Mindful Kids is a Therapeutic Educational Programme that is based on the principles of MBCT (mindfulness based cognitive behavioural therapy). Katheryn supports young people to recognise feelings and how they affect our thoughts and behaviours.  Katheryn teaches mindfulness and relaxation strategies to support young people feel more calm so they can overcome challenges. 

 

The programme is delivered in a fun and interactive way so that learning feels like play. 

 

More about Mindful Kids…  

 

Mindful Kids has been developed to help young people manage big emotions, learning self-regulation strategies and coping strategies to help navigate new and challenging situations.  

This involves helping children to identify feelings in themselves and others and validating those feelings, just knowing that these are feelings is enough , we don't need to change them, we just want to notice them. One of my favourite sayings is ‘feelings are like waves we can't stop them coming but we can choose which to surf’ How empowering is that! Allowing children to express their feelings is so important because they can't be contained just like the tides will never stop.  In mindful kids we learn that it's the behaviour that matters most, for example if you are angry and you hit someone that's not ok but if you're angry and go jump on the trampoline that is ok. Likewise if we are anxious about something and our behaviour is avoidant we may lose our confidence to overcome challenging situations but if we use our bravery skills and stay calm we can be even braver and more awesome than we already are!! And we are super awesome. 

 

Topics include: 

  • Recognising our strengths and unique differences

  • Recognising feelings in ourselves and others  

  • Mindfulness and Relaxation (how our brains work)  

  • Red light thoughts and Green light thoughts (how we think affects how we feel) 

  • How we can be the boss of our own brains! 

  • Positive role models and support people. 

  • Problem solving and coping step plans

  • Prepaying for future challenges.

Young people are figuring out who they are, who they want to be and how they fit into the world and these constant thoughts of worry can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression.

Katheryn provides a welcoming space that evokes a sense of calm where there are no rules of restrictions and only unconditional positive regard. Katheryn provides teens with the tools to listen to their own bodies, making the connection between the physical body and the mind. Developing mindfulness skills so they have increased autonomy and control of their thoughts and feelings which will equate to better choices and outcomes for themselves and for others around them.

Mindful Parenting

Katheryn offers private sessions for parents and adults who a would like to develop their own self management tools and learn strategies to help ease anxiety and stress and become more mindful and satisfied as an adult and as a parent.

Parents have an opportunity to learn practical skills to help manage their children's challenging behaviour and the do and dont's when parenting an anxious child. 

Parents who enrol their child into the Mindful kids programme receive a one off parents session that will set them up with some skills and Katheryn provides weekly feedback to parents so they are able to support their children with the home play activities.

Yoga

Katheryn's yoga classes have been designed to help people step out of their busy lives for a short time so they can connect to themselves and just be in the present moment.  Katheryn provides a 'Hatha' style yoga practice which incorporates breath and movement so that every body can reach their fullest potential finding more harmony and balance both on and off the mat.

​Katheryn offers two group classes every week and private sessions for anyone who would benefit from more tailored therapeutic intervention perhaps following an accident or injury or any form of trauma.
